Opportunity

Since opening in 1979, Port Henecan at San Lorenzo has become Honduras’ most strategic port for Pacific Ocean commerce. By 2010, growth in the iron and coal industries prompted local authorities to plan for the expansion of the Port to enhance shipping capabilities and increase production.

Solution

Hydro Nova’s task was to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the construction of a new quay that would be capable of accommodating larger tankers (50,000 DWT) for iron oxide cargos. Our engineering solution consisted of extending the quay by 230 m to achieve a final width of 530 m, designing a new 5.76 ha storage area for iron oxide and coal, and deepening the channel fairway and mooring area to a depth of 14 m by dredging.

Outcome

Once completed, these improvements will help significantly increase the number of vessels embarking in the port and achieve the goal of seven moorings per week.
