Client: European Commission; United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization; Ministry of Water Resources of Iraq
Opportunity
As surface water sources diminish to critical levels, Iraq looks to secure and develop its national groundwater reserves to support reconstruction and combat against shortages. But an incomplete understanding of the nation’s complex aquifer structures has hindered efforts to develop and manage the resource effectively.
Solution
To address this situation, Hydro Nova has been providing groundwater intelligence and optimization solutions to the Iraqi Government. Key services include carrying out an advanced hydrogeological survey with the use of advanced exploration and optimization modeling techniques, mapping, groundwater governance reform and development of Iraqi institutional capacities in groundwater planning and decision-making. Furthermore, Hydro Nova worked with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to provide scientific review of the project.
Outcome
Slated for completion in 2016, our products and services are providing Iraqi technicians and decision-makers new capabilities to harness the wealth of groundwater resources across the country and plan smart groundwater projects at multiple scales. The intelligence we provide will enable the Iraqi Government to successfully drill deep wells, establish a national scale groundwater monitoring network, and institute national groundwater policies to preserve aquifers across the country.
